Segesta

A mysterious archaeological site surrounded by greenery and silence

Nestled on rolling hills and surrounded by a canyon where a river flows, Segesta is an archaeological site charged with mystery and beauty

In a panoramic position on the green hills of inland Sicily but not far from the Gulf of Castellammare, surrounded by forests and vineyards, lies the archaeological site of Segesta.

Its temple, built between 430 and 420 b.C., welcomes those who enter the archaeological area, just behind the ticket office and in an elevated position.

You can reach it on foot, walking up on a flight of steps carved into the rock and surrounded by agaves and olive trees. There is nothing more poetic than to walk up this short path and catch a glimpse of the temple at the top of the hill.

Once at the top, the view repays the slight fatigue of the walk: the monument is imposing, framed by nature, and it is possible to walk around it or even enter it, in what was once its sacred heart accessible only to priests.

On the hill in front of the temple there is the acropolis, separated by a canyon. It can be reached on foot or by a bus provided for tourists.

The acropolis was characterized by a central square and a series of public buildings revolving around it and dates back to the 2nd century b.C

Continuing on foot, a path on the hill leads you to the theater, built between the 4th and 3rd centuries b.C. in a panoramic position facing the valley and the Gulf of Castellammare.

The archaeological tour of Segesta is an unmissable part of your trip to western Sicily.
